Robyn Beallor

 

The Award of Excellence is being given to Robyn Beallor, a Grade 8 student from Bialik Hebrew Day School, for her drawing entitled "In the Worst of Times, We Still Have Music". Her work has shown exceptional insight, sensitivity, and talent. In the opinion of the judges, the work not only captures the essence of this year's theme of Music of the Holidays, but clearly reflects a time in our history when Jewish music and the celebration of holidays was compromised.

 

Judges’ Comments

This artwork makes a profound statement.  The piece is memorable, heartbreaking, and beautiful.  The artist shows us the historical reality of our past through its perspective, composition, and shading and represents a time when colour was only achieved by music.

 

Artist’s Comments

I was thinking about how music can help people through the worst of times and we always find a way to celebrate the holidays.  I would like the viewer to notice that this is during the Holocaust where they are celebrating Shabbat with potatoes as candles.
