PERFORMER BIO
The Julius Reunion Concert features three of the original Canadian members first commissioned for a special performance as part of the 2006 Ashkenaz Festival: Montreal’s Josh Dolgin (aka Socalled), known for his revolutionary fusion of traditional Yiddish and Jewish music styles with hip hop, rap and funk; Mitch Smolkin, actor, singer and cultural innovator; and David Wall, composer, lyricist, singer, entertainer and vocal coach. They are joined onstage by American-Yiddish Operatic Bass Anthony Russell.
Julius:
Yiddish Barbershop Quartet
Josh Dolgin, Anthony Russell,
Mitch Smolkin and David Wall
It’s the reunion concert of Julius – a vocal supergroup unlike any other ensemble in the international Yiddish music scene! Featuring four of Canada’s leading contemporary performers and creators of original Yiddish vocal music, Julius uses close harmony techniques more associated with the practice of American Barbershop Quartet. The fabulously talented and ever-entertaining members of Julius draw upon a variety of Jewish repertoire (Cantorial, Chassidic, Yiddish folk and art song), as well as their own individual expertise in diverse musical styles. It’s an unprecedented union of internationally distinguished artists whose work reveals vital new directions in contemporary Yiddish music!
