PERFORMER BIO​

Simon Spiro is known in his native England as “The British Jazz Singer” for successfully balancing dual musical careers in Hazzanut and Pop Music.  He is recognized worldwide as one of today’s top Cantors and he has also made a mark in the pop world singing with Elton John, Faith Hill, Phil Collins, Cliff Richard and others. Simon performs throughout the world and recently starred in Toronto’s “British Yiddish & Kiddish Part 2” with Mike Burstyn and Cantor Itzhak Meir Helfgot. Simon is the founder and spiritual leader of The Song Shul, Toronto’s newest and most exciting synagogue.

Julia Barber holds an MMus in Opera from the University of Toronto. She has been a featured soloist with the Elora Festival Singers, Mississauga Symphony Orchestra, Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, Toronto Festival Singers, Aldeburgh Discovery Series, and Bayfield Festival. Other JMW shows include “The Great American Jewish Songbook” and the original “100 Years of Jewish Hollywood.” 

 

Charles Davidson has received two Juno nominations for his work with Tafelmusik Chamber Choir, and has been featured as a soloist with numerous Ontario ensembles. He recently starred in the musical "Catch Me If You Can" while completing a post-graduate certificate in corporate communications and public relations. www.charlesdavidson.ca

 

Elicia MacKenzie was the winner of TV's How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?, going on to star in The Sound of Music for which she received a Dora Award.  She has starred in Rock of Ages, Shrek the Musical, Cannibal the Musical, and most recently starred as Rose in the world premiere of Nicholas Lloyd Webber’s “The Little Prince.” www.eliciamackenzie.ca

 

Jeff Madden has performed across the country, including eight consecutive seasons at the Shaw Festival. He is perhaps best known for his Dora-award winning turn as Frankie Valli in "Jersey Boys", which he has performed over 700 times in Toronto and across Australia. We’re bringing back one of the most popular shows in our festival’s history! Jewish songwriters have dominated the Best Song category at the Oscars since it was introduced in 1934. Now, join this celebration of all-time favourite movie songs and the Jewish songwriters who wrote them, performed by the powerhouse voices of Simon Spiro and guest stars Jeff Madden, Elicia MacKenzie, Charles Davidson, Julia Barber and Briar Boake. With a 26-piece orchestra, film footage, exciting narration and a lot of laughter , this family-friendly concert features everything from MGM classics to James Bond themes and Disney songs. It’s a concert like none other, and a must-see for movie-goers and music-lovers of every generation!
