Kick off JMW 2019 with music of the Gypsies, Arabs and Jews! Join David Buchbinder, Roula Said, and their JUNO-nominated high-energy band on a journey through Spain to Iraq, Serbia to Yemen, presented with a funked-up downtown Toronto vibe. They tease and illuminate the connections among these related cultures, delivering the music with moving vocals, a strong groove and virtuosic playing. It’s an international party and you’re invited!
BIO

David Buchbinder: trumpeter, composer, producer, multiple JUNO winner, founder of the Ashkenaz Festival and of the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band, key figure in the Canadian Jewish music and World Music scenes.
Roula Said: singer, percussionist, dancer, movement artist, frequent guest artist, founding member of Maza Meze, teacher and healer.

Michael Occhipinti: electric guitar, 9-time JUNO nominee, innovative bandleader working in jazz, funk, and World Music, known especially for his Sicilian Jazz Project.
Chris Weatherstone: clarinet and alto sax, former member of Lemon Bucket Orchestra, leader of T.Dot Bangerz, mixing hip-hop and jazz, leader of the Drom Taberna Klezmer Jam.

Malcolm Connor: bass, performs regularly around Toronto with many groups and projects including Lindsay Foote & Co., Landen Vieira Quartet, Belinda Corpuz, the Toronto Jazz Orchestra, and Jazz Money.
​
Zach Sutton: drums, percussion, founding member of Jane’s Party, an internationally touring alt rock act, and of the Devon Cuddy Band; plays Jewish and Arabic music in his spare time.
